Google Latest Acquisition: Sparkbuy Search Engine

The search engine giant Google Inc., is again in the news for its latest acquisition; a Seattle-based search engine company Sparkbuy. Sparkbuy is a search engine for consumer electronics devices and Google has acquired it in less than six months after its debut, according to a note on the Sparkbuy website.

Sparkbuy which is based in Seattle is a startup led by entrepreneur Dan Shapiro, has raised $1 million in funding. It is a high-powered product search engine and comparison shopping site. Terms of the deal are still not disclosed, but Sparkbuy has ceased operations and the three-person team (CEO Dan Shapiro, Scott Haug, and Isaac Myers) will join Google’s Kirkland, Washington office.

The news comes just a little more than a month after Shapiro unveiled Sparkbuy. The site has been shut down, and from the note below it looks like the startup’s founder are joining Google as employees. According to Seattle Times, they will be working on Google’s new mortgage, credit card, and bank account comparison site Advisor, which was launched last week.

Sparkbuy ia an online service that allows users to compare prices and features of various electronics gadgets. (TVs, laptops, etc.). Just enter which criteria are important to you, and the search engine aims to allow a user to easily get recommendations on consumer electronics (like laptops) based on various input criteria and preferences, including price, feature options (like memory, hard drive space, battery life, etc.), among other filters. At launch last year, the startup was only focusing on laptops.

However, Shapiro declined to comment, but a message on the company’s Web site states that they are “stoked about the opportunity to share our vision for search with a broader audience.”

Here is the full message that greeted Sparkbuy’s visitors:

“We are excited that Sparkbuy will be joining Google,” Google said in a statement. “They have built an impressive comparison shopping site that is simple in design yet powerful for consumers, and we think their expertise, vision and energy will be a great addition to our Kirkland office.”

The search engine works by accumulating various bits of information about products and generating recommendations based on aggregated data. Sparkbuy has thousands of products in its database, including from Amazon Inc., and even has more than 3,000 products from North America’s largest consumer electronics chain Best Buy Inc. after reaching a deal with the company within weeks after it launched.

Shapiro would not comment on the sale, but, this marks a quick turnaround for Shapiro in less than two years: who, in December 2009, consolidated his photo-sharing company, Ontela, with the recently independent Photobucket.

Surprisingly, this marks one of the faster flips we have seen in recent years, right up there with Facebook’s buy of stealthy mobile startup Rel8tion before it even launched.

Google Keep on to Dominate the Rankings of Search Engines

Google has once again brought to the online search market in December, according to a new report by research firm comScore digital. Search huge based in California was 66.6 percent of all searches of explicit basis in the United States in December. This figure was 0.4 percent higher in November, comScore report.

Yahoo was a distant second at 16 percent, a decrease of 0.4 percent from November. Microsoft searches increased 0.2 percent to give the company’s sites 12 percent market share.

The term “explicit core search” excludes contextually driven searches that do not reflect specific user intent to interact with the search results, according to comScore. In all, there were 16,443 such searches conducted in December. Google accounted for 10,957, a 3 percent increase, and Yahoo was responsible for 2,631, which remained virtually unchanged from the company’s 2,627 from November.

Google and Facebook continue to rule the time of Internet users online. While Google is usually the most popular website on the internet, Facebook has experienced five times more views than the main search giant at one point in November, L2 consumers think tank.

In some case their sites had been banned and then we’ve had to help them clean up the mess to get back into the search engine’s good graces.

  • Watch for hints in dialogue when someone speaks of knowing all the “tricks” to “outsmart the search engines.”
    SEO Professionals do not “outsmart” or “trick” the search engines at all. But they’ve been trained in how to create truly relevant, high quality content that ranks based on developing useful pages that deliver high value to the visitor and satisfy the reason why the visitor searched in the first place. Many bits of dialogue are quite telling, so listen carefully when someone is describing there services to you.

  • As strange as it sounds, this industry is not JUST about top rankings. Ultimately, the goal is to gain top rankings but also you must understand how to compel visitors to respond. The best way I have found to describe SEO is as a set of layers, with the broadest scope at the top. Each of these layers needs to be set up with a specific focus, to give a clear picture to the search engines as to what the site is about.

Internet Focus – Also called Off-site Criteria or Link Building, involves focusing the influence of other websites at your own site, by building links from as many relevant and important sites as possible.

Website Focus – Each website must be focused around a specific theme. If your website is about “fine art” then each page should be about some aspect of fine art, and also the website domain name should contain the words “fine art”.

Page Focus – Each page must be focused around a topic related to the website theme. The page must be properly structured by tagging and labeling the areas that are used as markers by the search engines, such as the file name, page heading, title, META tags, body text and hyperlinks. You can also help give a page focus by linking to it from other pages on the site.

Image Focus – Images, as well as videos and graphical elements related to the topic, must also be correctly labeled. An image needs to be labeled in the file name, the ALT description tag and also with a caption below or next to the image on the page.

Using all of these SEO methods together will give the search engines the clearest possible picture of what the site is about. Also the search engines expect to see growth in both On-Site and Off-site criteria over time, so you should plan to regularly expand the site with related content and more links from other related websites.

Web site owners and search engine optimization professionals used to spend a lot of time worrying about meta tags. Which keywords should be added to the KEYWORDS tag? How to compose the content in the DESCRIPTION tag?

These days the issue of meta tags is easy to handle: They no longer play any role in ranking your site in the major search engines.

Come again? Yes, Bing and Google along with Ask and any other search engines that pass for competition do not use information from meta tags for ranking your site. It’s as simple as that.

If you want to go the extra mile, you could optimize the description tag, which Google may choose to use in the snippet on the search results page. It is not relevant to ranking, however.

To help the search engines robots crawl your site properly, you should mind your ROBOTS tags:

  • <META NAME=”ROBOTS”
    CONTENT=”ALL”>

    tells the search engine to index the page. However, this tag is superfluous. Search engines will also index pages without this tag.
  • <META NAME=”ROBOTS”
    CONTENT=”NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW”>

    indicates that a robot should neither index a document, nor analyze it for links.
  • <META NAME=”ROBOTS”
    CONTENT=”NOINDEX, FOLLOW”>

    means that a robot should not index this document, but that it should index the pages it is pointing to.

Note though, that if you need to limit the search engines access to your site, it is better to put a robots.txt file in the root directory of your site (provided that you have your own domain).
