The SaaS Eco-system of the Future with visionapp – Web Hosting
Microsoft Corp. and The Webby Awards today awarded the $50,000 grand prize in the Phizzpop Design Challenge to Station Four from Jacksonville, Florida.
The prize was presented to Station Four for developing the best site strategy and design aimed at helping Boys & Girls Clubs of America, one of the nation’s oldest non-profits, upgrade its website for a growing Web 2.0 audience.
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — It was fitting that visionapp (www.visionapp.com), a company whose mission is to take the complexity out of cloud services, present on the Software as a Service eco-system of the future.
The journey from infrastructure to the platform layer to the application service library — and finally to the individual user requires an often complex web of partnerships, visionapp chief executive officer Jürgen Gallmann explained.
visionapp envisions a reality where a multitude of services converge into one network. “Our life is changing constantly… our business life and our life at home is connected,” he said, and there need to be solutions that reflect that reality.
This is a reality for more than 10,000 businesses worldwide, ranging from small businesses to very large enterprises with a global presence that use visionapp’s tools and solutions. Through its global partner network, visionapp can provide a unified software and services model.
The key to this model is efficency. “Customers are looking to do more with less,” Gallmann said. Running and licencing visionapp’s cloud, SaaS and automation platform lets customers benefit from private and public cloud services without having to forge relationships with vendors across the industry.
Plus, end users can get their service quickly. This helps in instances where an organization can’t wait several months for an application to be deployed. And this is all done on a pay per use basis, so customers are not faced with upfront costs. “Customers like the ondemand model… and they like it becaue it’s pay only for use,” Gallmann said.
Additional SaaS solutions can be easy to sell customers on, based on an existing relationship, increasing average revenue per user.
visionapp provides three models: a Saas Portal with a standard application portfolio (vivio and Ingram Micro use this option); a white-label Saas Portal with customized portfolio and look (used by t-home) selecting outsourcing and hybrid (used by DHL). And additional capabilities can be added as are needed.
By taking this complexity out of the service model, managed service provider customers gain the business agility needed to react to volatile markets, manage complex compliance requirements, increase productivity, and free up resourses to speed up the development process and drive innovation. And that will be one of the greatest advantages the SaaS eco-system of the future holds.
Station Four Wins $50000 Grand Prize For Microsoft Phizzpop Design Challenge
Jacksonville, FL’s Station Four delivers best site strategy and design for redesigned Boys & Girls Clubs of America website
Las Vegas, NV March 16, 2010 — Microsoft Corp. and The Webby Awards today awarded the $50,000 grand prize in the Phizzpop Design Challenge to Station Four from Jacksonville, Florida.
The prize was presented to Station Four for developing the best site strategy and design aimed at helping Boys & Girls Clubs of America, one of the nation’s oldest non-profits, upgrade its website for a growing Web 2.0 audience.
Station Four is an interactive design and strategy firm founded in 2007 by two University of Florida graduates, Chris Olberding and Chris Lahey.
Station Four and fellow finalists Metia and Bradley and Montgomery were selected to pitch their concepts before a live audience at MIX10, Microsoft’s annual conference for web designers and developers in Las Vegas. The winner was selected by a panel of judges from Microsoft, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, which presents the Webby Awards.
To participate in the challenge, entrants were required to propose a new site design and strategy leveraging Microsoft Silverlight and the Microsoft Web Platform that would help the organization better engage donors, parents, volunteers and the media.
Station Four’s winning proposal was singled out by the judges for its fun and modern design, solid site architecture, easy-to-use navigation, and innovative integration of social media tools, including a Boys & Girls Club Hub on the home page that that would bring all social media related information, such as Facebook and Twitter updates, into a common interface.
“The Boys & Girls Clubs of America provide invaluable services to children across the country,” said Jon Roskill, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s U.S. Business and Marketing Organization, and King County (Wash.) Boys & Girls Club board member. “As the internet continues to create exciting new ways to connect online, it’s essential that nonprofit organizations like BGCA develop a Web presence that actively engages the communities they serve. The Phizzpop Challenge combines the very latest software from Microsoft with cutting-edge Web design support to help the Clubs reach millions of kids nationwide.”
“What’s especially exciting about the Phizzpop Design Challenge is that it gives up-and-coming agencies like Station Four a chance to compete on a level playing field,” said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. “All of the finalists presented new and innovative ideas using Microsoft technologies that will benefit not just the vital work of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, but all organizations seeking to enhance their online presence.”
“We are grateful for the opportunity to benefit from some of the brightest and most innovative design talent, especially as it relates to the Web and interactive media,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of America President and CEO Roxanne Spillett. “In an increasingly competitive marketplace, nonprofits must meet donors and the general public where they live, and the Web cuts across all socioeconomic dynamics.”

Web Designers – Five Crucial Questions
Working with a web designer can be both a terrific and frustrating experience. Here are 5 important things you’ll want to bear in mind as you get your new site designed and uploaded to your web hosting account.
Are they Legitimate? Have they been around longer than this week? Though it is very tempting, and your budget may scream for you to consider using your nephew who puts up sites, or a new friend of a friend you met at McDonalds last week; DON’T DO IT! Almost invariably you’ll be disappointed. If you want to present a professional web presence to the world, use a pro. Get references, ask for emails and/or phone numbers to speak with past clients. If they have any satisfied customers, you’ll find out fast.

Clue: What Does Their Site Look Like? A large indication of just how talented and serious about their business a company is, is reflected in the look of their own site. A good web design company will have a good looking website. Period. It may not be done in a style you might have done, but the quality will show through. Moreover, they should have a portfolio of their work available to view online, and at least some of them should be live online. A portfolio with no live sites tells me no one has hired them yet.
From Scratch or From Template? Are they going to build this from the ground up or use a pre-existing template as a basis for designing your site. This is important to know on several levels. First, you can seriously overpay for a site design based on a template. Second, if you are commissioning a serious site for your business and brand, you’ll want to make sure you are entirely unique and that care is taken to incorporate all the elements you want and need into the design. After all, you are paying a price for this service, and you need to be sure you’re getting your money’s worth!
Any SEO Included? You need to understand just what the design will and can do for your site design as far as search engine optimization (SEO) goes, and this is more than a brief mention that they will populate the proper meta tags and so on. They need to understand basic SEO as it applies to design, and be able to relate that to you. Also, make sure you address the issue of using Flash on your site, and get some straight answers. If they simply say that Flash is no longer a problem for Google, seek an exit. The issue is more complex than that.
Customer Service? What’s their customer service like? Are they going to plop a pile of zip files in your email and be on to their next client, or do you have some ongoing recourse if and when things need attention? You may need to work with these people for a while: you’ll want to get things spelled out clearly at the start.
Get these concerns addressed before you hire them, and you’ll find that not only will your site look better, but you’ll have fewer headaches as well!
